I have a few of the following books. However, most of this information, I found listed in either The Library of Congress Catalog or in an index of children's books that the children's librarian showed me. I have learned of others from other Wombles fans. If you have a Wombles book and don't see it here or can add some of the missing information to those that are here only partialy, drop me a note.

Looking to own some of these books? Look at the Collectables page and read the hints.
I convinced Jennifer Lewis to write some comments on each of the books which she has read. Actually, I originaly asked for synopses but she was insightful, (and more sagacious than I) and thought that it would be better not to give away the stories but just whet our appitites. Mine's whetted. :> Her comments are marked by 'JL:'

[I agree wholeheartedly.]

  15. Great Uncle Bulgaria looks ahead

JL: "The Wandering Wombles is the story of the MOVE to Hyde Park. It is the book most apt for screen adaptation as a road movie - with WOM1 of course as star. The story has some super descriptions of Burrow architecture which interestingly enough are very similar to the dwellings of the inhabitants of a central Australian town, Cooper Pedy. Aussies live in 'burrows' to keep cool in Summer whereas wombles seem to live in burrows to keep warm - in both cases this is very Clever as the ground temperature is more stable underground. This book is remarkable in that it provides the first ever plausible explain-ation of the Loch Ness monster. As usual Elisabeth Beresford makes some insightful comments about human behaviour, and tourists in particular."
JL: "I've finally worked out why they moved Hyde Park - it was due to Subsidence of the Burrow as I had guessed. They actually moved back again to Wimbledon which was an eyeopener.

JL: "The Wombles at Work is about the fight against Pollu or pollution. Each Womble comes up with marvelous ideas and inventions to combat the Pollu and the best one is awarded a gold medal by Great Uncle Bulgaria. I am not sure I agree with his choice but you can decide for yourself! I feel that this story is a bit depressing despite its optomistic ending as it makes the world out to be much less charming than in the other books."

The Wombles to the Rescue

London, England: Ernest Benn Ltd., 1974.

  5. Great Uncle Bulgaria sends a letter

  7. Tomsk has an idea
  8. Miss Adelaide puts her foot down
  9. The big splash
  10. Orinoco on television
  11. Remember you're a Womble

JL: "The Wombles to the Rescue has a similar theme to the Wombles at Work although this time the problem is that humans are being too tidy. I like the introduction of Cousin Botany from Australia. He wears an Akubra hat in the pictures (as worn by Australian soldiers in WWI). He is a very believable character as far as I'm concerned - in the style of the true aussie male he in uncommunicative until something goes wrong and then he gets angry when it's too late to be rational. Botany bay is just south of Sydney Harbour by the way. It is where Sir Joseph Banks found his most interesting specimens of Australian flora."

The Wombles Go Round the World

by Elisabeth Beresford
Illustrated by Margaret Gordon; #p; #cm; hard cover;
London, England: Ernest Benn Ltd., 1976.

Colin Epstein: "It details the adventures of two teams of Wimbledon Wombles (Bungo & Orinoco and Tomsk & Wellington) who travel in hot air balloons to meet other Womble clans all over the world. It's one of the least plausible, but was one of my favorites as a kid."

I think the previous two books are the ones I borrowed from the library. They were very short and written for _little_ children. I also don't like the puppets nearly as much as Margaret Gordon's original illustrations. (I've been told that her later illustrations were drawn to resemble the puppets.) I seem to recall that the stories in these two books were retellings of adventures contained in "The Wombles". They were still fun to read, but the main book was better.
